Hand-Drawn vs AI-Generated Pet Portraits Using Adobe FireFly

Is AI the Answer to Pet Portraits?

In recent years, AI-generated artwork has become increasingly popular, making it easier than ever to create images with just a few clicks. But when it comes to celebrating the unique personality and special bond you share with your pet, can AI truly compare to a hand-drawn portrait?

In this article, I’ll explore the key differences between hand-drawn and AI-generated pet portraits, helping you decide which option best captures the heart and soul of your beloved companion. I am no expert in using AI, but for this test, I used Adobe Firefly. I will show the prompts and results.

But what is an AI-Generated Pet Portrait?

AI-generated pet portraits are created using artificial intelligence (e.g. ChatGPT, Adobe FireFly, Gemini Nano Banana) software that transforms a photograph into an artistic style. The process is fast, affordable, and can produce eye-catching results within minutes.

While AI can imitate different artistic styles, it relies entirely on algorithms and existing patterns. It doesn’t understand your pet’s personality, story, or the emotional connection you share.

What Is a Hand-Drawn Pet Portrait?

A hand-drawn pet portrait is created by an artist who carefully studies your pet’s features, expressions, and unique characteristics. Every detail—from the sparkle in the eyes to the texture of the fur—is thoughtfully illustrated to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

A professional artist doesn’t simply copy a photograph; they interpret it with creativity, skill, and emotion.

Emotional Value

A hand-drawn portrait tells a story. It reflects the love, memories, and personality of your pet, making it far more meaningful than an automated image.

Uniqueness

Every hand-drawn portrait is completely original. No two artworks are ever exactly alike.

AI-generated images often resemble thousands of others created using the same software and style.

Attention to Detail

Artists can improve lighting, adjust colours, combine multiple reference photos, remove distractions, and even recreate missing details from damaged or old photographs.

AI is limited to what it interprets from the uploaded image and may produce inaccurate features or unrealistic results.

Quality

Hand-drawn artwork is created with precision and experience, making it suitable for framing and displaying for generations.

AI artwork can sometimes contain distorted eyes, unusual fur patterns, incorrect anatomy, or inconsistent details.

Personal Connection

Working directly with an artist means your portrait can be customised to your exact preferences, whether you’d like a special background, multiple pets together, or a memorial tribute.

AI cannot understand sentimental requests or personal stories.

Which One Makes the Better Gift?

A hand-drawn pet portrait makes a thoughtful, lasting gift for birthdays, anniversaries, memorials, Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or simply to celebrate the unconditional love of a cherished companion.

Because it is created especially for one person and one pet, it becomes a treasured keepsake that can be passed down through generations.

Final Thoughts

AI has made creating artwork faster than ever, but speed cannot replace the care, creativity, and emotional connection that come from a hand-drawn pet portrait.

If you’re looking for artwork that truly celebrates your pet’s personality and creates a lasting memory, a hand-crafted portrait remains the timeless choice.

So Lets Put it to the Test

I used Cayden the cat for this experiment. I used this as our reference image in Firefly.

Prompt 1 – Create a fun watercolour pet portrait with a white background.

The result, as you can see, is a dog, not a cat…. So the AI did not recognise that the image was a cat. This was done with Firefly version 1

Prompt 2 – Create a fun watercolour cat pet portrait with a white background using the reference. Make watermarks and brush strokes visible. Use natural colours, the same as the reference.

The result was somewhat disappointing. It was trying, but needed more refined information.

Prompt 3 – Create a fun watercolour cat pet portrait with a white background. Make watermarks and brush strokes visible. ( I switched over to Firefly 3)

The result is a lot better, but still not close to the original.

Prompt 4 – Create a fun watercolour cat pet portrait with a white background. Make watermarks and brush strokes visible.

Here, Firefly started to take over, and I forgot to add the reference image. It still did a very good job on its own accord.

Prompt 5 – Create a watercolour cat pet portrait with a white background. Make watermarks and brush strokes visible. keep close to reference

Result is not good but is still trying.

Prompt 7 – Create a watercolour cat pet portrait with a white background. Make watermarks and brush strokes visible. keep close to reference

And at last, with Firefly 5, it could render a watercolour-like image…. But no detail whatsoever.
